Whirling Butterflies

Whirling Butterflies (Gaura lindheimeri) is no rose, no lily, no flamboyant bloom demanding admiration. He is a quiet knight errant of the garden, thriving where others falter: poor soil, dry winds, forgotten roadsides. Native to Texas and Louisiana, he once stood unnoticed except by botanists and butterflies. His roots reach deep, his stems stretch tall, and his pale pink or white flowers flicker at dusk like moths in twilight. He moves with persistence, not pomp. Because of his dance, he crossed the ocean into European gardens, where he now twirls in morning light for bees and in evening hush for moths. He offers nectar, not perfume. His chemistry is modest: flavonoids to shield, phenolic acids to endure. No thorns, no poisons, no legends of healing. But he has movement, and in that movement, he is beautiful.
